Agoraphobia & Panic Attacks And NLP

by Alan Densky

Agoraphobia is truly one of the most crippling of all phobias. This stems from an irrational fear of unfamiliar or potentially uncomfortable situations, and can grow to the point where a sufferer feels confined to their home. If you have agoraphobia, you don't need to let this condition dominate you. You can learn about this disorder and find out how to beat it by using hypnosis therapy.

The word agoraphobia literally means "fear of the marketplace," but individuals may feel terrified in any situation with a crowd. These situations are usually public areas or new places outside of the home. Sufferers may fear spending time in shopping centers, lines, airplanes, restaurants, or any place where they might not feel entirely secure.

Agoraphobia sufferers are scared of having panicky feelings or panic attacks in a situation where it might be difficult or impossible for them to escape. People with agoraphobia usually lead happy and typical lives in the places where they feel comfortable, even visiting with guests and conducting business from the comfort of their own homes. Unfortunately, the phobia can be so extreme that many times the afflicted will only feel secure in the most confined spaces. A recently publicized case involved a woman whose fear was so extreme that she didn't come out of her bathroom for several years, causing damage to her own health as a result.

Agoraphobia often arises from other anxiety disorders and phobias. For instance, sufferers of social phobia may develop agoraphobia because they are nervous about having to interact with others. It can also stem from traumatic occurrences such as having an accident outside of the home. Veterans of war frequently develop the phobia along with post-traumatic stress disorder. It can affect both genders, though it is thought that agoraphobia is more common amongst women.

People with agoraphobia might think that they risk humiliating themselves if they go out in public and experience a panic attack. It is humiliating for a phobia sufferer to exhibit symptoms such as trembling, sweating, or nervous breaksdowns and lose their self-control.

Agoraphobia is usually treated with anti-anxiety medication or counseling. Agoraphobia can be especially challenging to treat because sufferers may have other phobias and underlying causes for their problems.

The reason why people with phobias cannot seem to control their fears is because their feelings are based at the unconscious level of the mind. No amount of conscious effort or willpower is entirely sufficient to control a fear that comes from this deep within the mind.

Hypnosis techniques used in Ericksonian hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) are effective on phobias because they work at the unconscious level. Hypnosis is an excellent treatment option because it is non-invasive and safe, with no negative side effects.

There are Ericksonian hypnotherapy and NLP programs available on CD that are remarkable because they can cure any phobia, or even multiple phobias. It is not necessary to get a program that specifically treats each phobia. This is because a good program will work on the thought process that triggers every phobia. This makes this sort of program ideal for many people with agoraphobia.

A good multi-session program will offer multiple techniques, which will make the program work for virtually every user. With a step-by-step process, people can overcome their phobias with relative ease.

Achieving a state of calm is the first step in the hypnotherapy phobia program. As a type of therapy, hypnosis has traditionally been used for relaxation, allowing even the most panicky people feel calm and rested. Once a person is free of anxiety, NLP techniques extinguish a phobia by changing the single thought process that is responsible for it.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy is a remarkable type of hypnosis that utilizes suggestions hidden in a conversation, story or metaphor to treat a fear. Ericksonian hypnotherapy works better than conventional, traditional hypnosis because the unconscious mind finds it more difficult to resist suggestions that are hidden, than direct suggestions. Instead of direct suggestions, which simply try to "tell" your unconscious what to do, suggestions that are embedded in stories and metaphors will direct your mind into a desirable, stress-free thought process.

People who find themselves too anxious to step outside their house can gain their confidence and freedom by trying hypnotic techniques. A program with Ericksonian hypnotherapytechniques and NLP techniques is ideal for those who wish to overcome their fears once and for all. Hypnosis therapies offer a tremendous benefit for sufferers of agoraphobia and other anxiety disorders.
